Over
the last several years, Bayer AG manufactured drug Baycol, has been linked
to over 50 deaths.
On August
8th, 2001, Bayer AG pulled their popular cholesterol-reducing drug, Baycol,
off the shelves. Bayer now finds themselves in the middle of class-action
lawsuits for product liability and negligence. Baycol was linked to severe
health problems and a number of reported deaths brought on by a severe
condition called Rhabdomyolysis. Other drugs that are part of the drug
family called statins have been linked to the rare condition, but Baycol
is the only drug in the statins family that has resulted in fatalities.

August
23, 2001, “Could Bayer Have Avoided The Baycol Mess"
U.S. lawyers are lining up with class-action lawsuits
representing patients who took Baycol and, instead of
producing revenue, Baycol is now a source of significant
liability- and some industry watchers speculate that,
with Baycol gone, Bayer's pharmaceutical division won't
be able to survive as an independent entity.

22, 2001, “Litigation hangs over
Bayer unit Potential bidders at Bay” Pharmaceutical
giants eyeing the ailing drugs unit of Germany's Bayer
AG are unlikely to pounce until the company can resolve
liability issues over its withdrawn anticholesterol drug
Baycol, bankers and analysts said yesterday. Bayer, which
said last week that two top drug groups were interested
in its pharma arm -- said to be worth around US$20-billion
-- could face billions of dollars in compensation claims
from class-action suits against the Baycol brand, analysts
said.

the risk of muscle deterioration when unexplained muscle

occur. Earlier this month Bayer AG withdrew its brand
of statin, Baycol, after it was linked to 31 deaths.

15, 2001, “Lawsuits and Competitor Ads Start, Responding
to Baycol Recall” Last
December, 87-year-old Lilbert Sparks of Oklahoma City
began taking the statin drug Baycol. His family says that
6 weeks later, he died of cardiac arrest. Thirty-one deaths
in America are attributed to the cholesterol-lowering
drug, which the Bayer Corporation pulled from the market
last week. Sparks's son, Steven, has now filed what could
be a multimillion-dollar class-action lawsuit against
the drug maker, blaming Bayer for his father's death and
possibly others. The lawsuit charges the Bayer Corporation
with product liability and negligence, blaming Bayer for
not adequately informing doctors and patients of possible
risks. About 700,000 Americans have taken Baycol. Read

statins, which work by limiting the liver's production of bad cholesterol,
were introduced in 1987 and have quickly become one of the fastest-growing
segments of the drug industry. Statin sales are expected to hit $20
